What’s Your Game Plan?

© 2001 Patricia Katz, Optimus Consulting

As a meeting planner, what are you trying to accomplish with your upcoming event? That is the number one question that quality speakers will ask before accepting any engagement. Mature speakers know they can’t do everything. They also know that there are some audiences and some purposes for which they are a great match.

So…before you pick up the phone to ask about a speaker’s availability for your event, take a few moments to pull your own thoughts together. This checklist of questions may help.

About the event:

-What is the overall purpose of this event in the life of your organization?

-What two or three key issues do you hope to address during the event?

-What shifts in attitude, knowledge or action are you trying to create?

About this specific session:

-What is the role of this particular session in your overall game plan?

-How do you expect participant thought or action to change as a result of this session?

-What evidence would you look for to tell you this session had been successful?

A great speaker will work with you on your agenda to get the job done. That’s only possible if you share the game plan from the start.
